Welcome to Connecting Scripture to Real Life

Welcome to my blog. If you’re here, I am guessing that growing closer to Jesus, knowing God better, or living more as a disciple of Jesus matters to you. If not, welcome anyway. My main activity here will be on my blog. I have extensive academic training in biblical studies. I could use that to talk to other scholars, but that’s not what I want to do. I want to use what I’ve learned to help you make connections between Scripture and your real life, like working at a day job, relating to a spouse, friends, and others, and seeking to know and love God more. Those are things I want when I read the Bible. I want to unpack passages in ways that you can live out, not write boring articles for boring academic journals.I’m a committed Christ-follower. The Bible, Scripture, is important to me. It is the primary way that I can hear God speaking to me. The Bible says of itself, “All Scripture is God-breathed and useful/beneficial/advantageous for teaching, for rebuke, for improvement, for training in righteousness, in order that the person of God may be capable and equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17). That all sounds practical to me. I didn’t get that from a translation. I translated the original myself. I’m responsible for the word choices. I used “person,” instead of “man,” as most translations do, because the word Paul uses means person or human. It can be used of males, females, or groups of both. I seek to use Scripture in those ways for myself, and I hope this site will help you do the same.

You’ll find that I’m pretty inclusive. I have a significant visual impairment, and am committed to the truth that God doesn’t care whether I’m fully physically able or not. I also hope that the site will be accessible to those who likewise have vision issues. I want to show the same hospitality here that Jesus demonstrated while on earth. God loves women as much as men and uses both. Jesus doesn’t care what your skin color or nationality is. All are welcome here.

You’ll also find in my blog posts that I seek to be true to the original meaning of the biblical text. I won’t offer connections to real life that have nothing to do with the original intention of the text.

There’s one more thing that is important for you to know. For the same reasons stated above, I’m writing a book on how to refresh and deepen your prayers by praying Scripture. I hope to have it done soon. You’ll see some of it in my blog posts. I’d be very appreciative for any input you might have on my posts. It’s no use for me to write them if they don’t help you see how Scripture can help you in your real life. Equipping others to grow closer to Jesus through teaching about the meaning and ways to apply Scripture is what I’m all about.. I hope you’ll come along and we can take this journey together.

Book review: Forty Days of Decrease by Alicia Britt Chole

“Approaching a fresh endeavor can be both energizing and stressful. New is inspiring. New is enlightening. And new is, oddly enough, a reminder of what is now old. When fresh beginnings are stalked by the memories of stale endings, a sickly substance can steal our strength: regret. Regret empties anticipation, flattens dreams, and suffocates hope, because regret is a form of self-punishment. Whereas hindsight helps us learn from the past, regret beats us up with the past.”
